Recently, I got the opportunity to witness a football match between Donbosco School, Guwahati and Christ Jyoti School, Nagaon at Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon town. Both the teams were equally strong. The referee blew the whistle at 11 a.m. sharp and the match started. In the first half Donbosco School dominated. They could easily penetrate the defence of the opposition team but could score only a goal because of the extraordinary performance of the goalkeeper of Christ Jyoti School. In the second half, Christ Jyoti School played aggressively. They scored a goal just before the final blow of whistle. Now the match became drawn and had to be settled with a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, the Donbosco School team took the  lead and won the match. The match was really exciting.

Today I want to inform you about a very inspiring book I have read recently. I am sure you will like it too. The book is “I am Malala” written by MalalaYousafzai. As you know, she is a daring young girl from the Swat Valley in Pakistan who had the courage to defy the Talibans and got shot by them. They shot her for propagating education for girls. But she miraculously survived. She wrote about her ethnicity, the customs of her community, the increased worsening of condition in Pakistan, her efforts to change it, and the incidents around her getting shot in a school bus and coming round in Birmingham, UK. She is now a symbol of peace and courage. She has got the prestigious Nobel Prize for Peace in 2014. Her book is really inspiring. Take time to read it.

I am so excited to tell you about my visit to Delhi in an educational excursion last week. Delhi has a rich historical background. It was named “Indraprastha” by Pandavas and remained the capital of Hindu kingdoms for thousands of years. The Muslim kings also made it their capital. It has many historical buildings such as Humayun’s tomb, QutabMinar, tombs of Safdarjang and Nizamuddin, The Parliament House, RashtrapatiBhavan etc. Apart from the historical monuments, it has the offices of the embassies, high commissions, trading firms and many other organisations. Delhi, indeed, is a treasure-chest of antiquity and heart of India.

As you know, my Test Examination / Pre-Final Assessment is going to be held next month. I had been studying moderately since the commencement of classes. I failed to score good marks in the Half yearly Examination. After that I have intensified my studies, but now I am finding myself at a loss. The curriculum is so vast that I can hardly grasp it. Besides, my health has also deteriorated due to stress. But, as they say, “better late than never”, I am trying to regain my hopes and courage. Kindly pray for me. Good bye.

How are you? I’m fine. Please don’t stop sending letters to me because I look forward to your letters very eagerly.
You know well that I’m not a spendthrift. I always spend on worthwhile things. My father provides me pocket money every week. I have saved much of my pocket money till today. So, I’m now thinking of spending some money in traveling. As you know, traveling increases our knowledge and widens our perspectives. So, I have decided to visit some historical places including Delhi, Agra, Vellore, Jaipur, Sivasagar and Amritsar. My parents will accompany me and assist me financially if needed. It’ll be a wonderful experience. I’m setting out next Thursday. I’ll send you some of the photographs taken there. That’s my plan for the 3 months long holiday. Do inform me your plans and keep in touch. Bye.

    • Dear XYZ,
It’s been long since I received your last letter. Kindly remember to communicate with me every now and then. You know I am quite excited to tell you my recent experiences in a tour programme arranged by my relatives.
Last Saturday my maternal uncle came to our house with the proposal that we need to accompany him with his family and the families of my maternal aunts to a trip to Kaziranga National Park in Golaghat district in Assam. I was quite excited to hear this. Initially my parents refused as my exams were nearing. But I had a tough time convincing them. On the 2nd day of June, we were picked up in a Tata Traveller van from home. It took nearly three hours to reach Kohora, where we got off near a marvelous entrance gate. After paying at the counter for elephant safari, we got on a large elephant. The mahout directed the elephant into the lush green forest. It was an ethereal experience. I could see tall trees, long reeds, bushy meadows and all sorts of animals. In the distance I could see the rare one-horned rhinoceros — the pride of Assam as well as India. Slowly and steadily the elephant drew near some rhinos grazing in a marshland. The animal was so gigantic and majestic that I was gaping with wonder. Nearby I could see some wild buffaloes and spotted deer. I took several snaps with my digital camera. Migratory birds were preying fish on marshlands and water holes. I kept on asking the mahout and he gave me jovial replies. After spending nearly three hours in the national park we had to get out, though I wished to remain some more time. It was such a wonderful experience, my friend, that could hardly be missed. If you come to our house next time, we will plan to visit it again. That’s all in this letter. Kindly take time to reply.

We are very eager to take part in field trips in order to have first-hand experience on the lifestyle and behaviour of the ethnic tribes. Apart from that we are in need of recreation as we hardly get any time for these in our hectic schedule. We are ready to bear the expenses. • Dear xyz,
I hope you are fine by the grace of the Almighty. You wrote in your last letter to advise you regarding the subject you should choose for in Class IX. Well, I would suggest you take Advanced Mathematics as an elective/optional subject. By choosing this subject you can get familiarised with some of the mathematical theorem that are also taught in the 10+2 level. Besides, you will get enough proficiency to clear competitive examinations. If you have planned to choose the Science Stream in 10+2 then this is the best option for you. But if you plan to choose the Arts Stream you should take up Hindi as there is ample scope of getting a job of teaching Hindi in schools. Moreover, as you know, Hindi is our national language. It will enable you to communicate in most of the places in India when you travel. Besides, you may take it up as a core paper if you appear in UPSC examination. These are the best options for you to choose. It’s upto you what you choose because you know better which subject will be easier for you. But, though Advanced Mathematics and Hindi seem to be difficult, these may turn fruitful in your career. Do inform me what you take up. Take care.

      • Dear papa,
Take my regards. I hope you and mom are safe and sound. I am not so well. I couldn’t face the last examination with proper preparation. That’s why I am writing this letter.
Papa, you know how much effort I put to studies. I was doing well in the previous exams, but this time I was unable to perform well. The reason is that I was so engrossed with my studies that I frequently used to take my breakfast and lunch outside. I didn’t want to lose my time cooking. Sometimes I even skipped breakfast. This habit has taken a toll on me and I have lost all my stamina. I experienced severe cramps and bowl disorder. I consulted a doctor and took some medicines. But my condition remained the same. I am emaciated now. Due to these health related issues I couldn’t concentrate well in my studies. So I presume my results won’t be upto the mark this time. But don’t worry I will manage to pass the exam with decent marks. I assure you I won’t do this mistake again and will take care of my health. I will go home after the final exams are over. Miss you all. Bye.

    • Dear brother,
I hope you are fit and fine. I am not much fine as I am suffering from frequent fever since the occurrence of the artificial flood at our town. Since the monsoon started it had been continuously raining for more than two weeks. Most of the areas got flooded and communication became impossible. The main reason behind this is the poor drainage system. Businessmen suffered loss and students couldn’t reach schools and colleges. A pedestrian woman died by sinking into a gutter in a pavement. Many cars got trapped on the flood-hit roads. Casualty from Dengue has risen due to the unhygienic atmosphere. In short, it was complete chaos during those horrible days. Now the water-logged streets have dried up, but these have remained filthy and odorous. I have lost my desire to live in such a town. You too live in such a town, so shift to better places before it is too long.

    • Q. 14. Write a letter to your friend describing how digital boards are used for teaching in your school.

      Ans :

      Dear friend,

      Dear friend ………… ,

I hope you are well by the grace of the Almighty. I am well too. Please convey my regards to your parents. It’s been long since I received your last letter. So I have thought of writing this letter.

I want to inform you today about the wonderful learning experience on digital boards. Recently the school authorities have installed digital interactive boards in every classroom in our school. It’s so interesting a teaching tool to learn things easily. It’s like a huge projected image on a screen that can be controlled by touching on the screen. Our science teacher showed videos there. Our maths teacher solved math problems on the board by writing with his fingers on the screen and called us one by one to solve sums on the board itself. Our English teacher dragged words from a sentence and placed down while teaching voice. He also opened internet browser there and searched for rules on voice. We were so overwhelmed to see those. Learning has never been so easy and fun. I suggest you take the lead and demand such teaching tools at your school. Otherwise shift to our school. We will learn together.

I hope you are well. I am well too. I am writing this letter to let you know that I have visited a planetarium recently. I went there with my parents. It is called Birla Planetarium in Kolkata. After I entered and took seat there, the show started. I could see stars and planets in the night sky overhead on a large dome-shaped screen. It looked so real, I thought it’s really night. The Sun, the moon, the planets were seen very close to me. At times I got scared to see Sun and the tailed comets. It was so thrilling. The show was over and we got out. I was surprised it was still day outside. You should not miss going to the planetarium. That’s all for today. Bye.

    • Dear friend,
I hope you are fit and fine by the grace of the Almighty. You must be going on well with your studies as before. I am fine too. My exams are over and I am spending leisurely time here.
In order to spend the holidays in a productive way I have come up with with an idea of cleaning the streets in our area with the help of some of my friends. It’s so embarrassing to pass through the streets here because of the stinking garbage bins and the blocked drains. I have discussed this with some of my friends and they have shown their willingness. Next Saturday, I have planned to start cleaning the garbage bins by using some shovels and a small cart. We will also clean the drains. Then we will dump the garbage in the nearby swamp. I have also arranged some electronic media to focus our cleanliness drive so that the local administration may be aware of the unhygienic condition. I suggest you join us to make it fruitful. That’s all. I’ll be waiting for your response.

It’s been long since you sent your last letter. I hope you are in good health and spirit. All of us in our family are well too. Please do visit us once in a while.
I am so anxious to see the system of apartheid in our country. The whites assume themselves of higher breed and look down upon the blacks. They have become so biased and prejudiced that they even deny the blacks their basic rights. Peaceful protests from the blacks are suppressed by the administration. If there arises a revolt, the ruling whites take to mass killing. I am deeply saddened at these and thinking of preparing plans to subvert this draconian system. I have planned to organise the common mass and lead a campaign to be named “Nonconformity”, a campaign to disobey govt policies in a peaceful way. The idea came from Gandhi who had successfully led India towards victory. We will have to endure much pain but still it’s the best way. I request you to join the campaign and fight for our rights. I know you have a large friend circle, so you should invite all of your friends to this noble endeavour. If your parents don’t allow them convince them. Otherwise I will send a letter to them. May the Almighty be your guide. Bye. Take care.

    • Dear friend,
It’s been long since you sent me your last letter. I suppose you are very much busy these days due to business related journeys. I am fine but spending time without any purpose.
I know it’s a taxing task for you to travel frequently to anywhere within Assam. But there’s no way to avoid this because it’s your profession. I am very much concerned for you. So I would suggest a few things for a safe and happy journey. Firstly, never accept food offered by fellow passengers and refuse it with courtesy. Secondly, keep an eye on your luggage and keep it near you. Thirdly, never get carried away by friendly gestures of strangers and maintain a distance because he may be a trickster. Fourthly, keep your wallet in the front pocket. Fifthly, never travel without a ticket. Sixthly, keep on informing your parents where you have reached. Seventhly, do not eat junk food as these may disturb your bowels. Eighthly, check where the emergency chain and exit are if you are traveling by a train. Ninthly, don’t carry expensive things if they are not absolutely necessary. I hope you will follow these points for your safety. Remember, if you are not careful you may lose not only your valuables but also your life. So always be careful. I wish you a happy journey for your trips. Take care. Bye.

    • Dear cousin,
How’s life going on in the city? Must be full of fun, isn’t it? It will seem like fun for some years because you are new to the city. But I bet you will soon be fed up with all the hustle and bustle of city life. Life will get more hectic and mechanical as your days pass. Cities are like a pandemonium having all sorts of problems like traffic jam, noise, water logging, pollution, drinking water crisis, high price of commodities, goons etc. Never forget the blissful tranquil life you used to spend in your home at the village. Staying at a village gives you the rare privilege of assimilating yourself with nature. Nature in essence is simple and majestic. It is an inspiration to many poets and writers. The morning hue, the chirping of birds, the mist, the soft breeze, the shade of trees, the twilight fill the mind with thoughtfulness, tranquility and bliss. The people here are simple and jovial. They help each other and keep in touch. They curtail all unnecessary luxuries and comforts, and yet they are full of enthusiasm. I believe in the dictum — simple living high thinking. I suggest you lead a simple life wherever you are and make your thoughts broader. Don’t just blindly follow some fashion and trends and bogus lifestyle. Please don’t misunderstand me, I genuinely think of your better life. Do follow my advice and keep in contact with me. Take care. Bye.

Mom, I am filled with happiness to let you know that I have faced the Class IX final examination quite successfully and I am confident of securing good marks. As our exams are over I along with some of my close friends have made plans for a tour to Gwalior city and Agra. It’s a five days’ programme and I don’t have much money for the expenses to be made. So please do send me an amount of Rs 5000/- to my SBI account as soon as possible because we have planned it next week. Prepare some delicious sweets for me and send me through courier service. Mom please don’t worry, I’ll travel safely and won’t overspend. I’ll get to learn many things by visiting historical monuments. Kindly convince papa also and send the things I have requested. Love you all. Take care. Bye.

You know why I have written you this letter? It’s Ganesh Chaturthi next Saturday. Like earlier years, our family is making elaborate arrangements for this festival. A large and pompous pendal is being constructed in front of our home and decorative lights are being installed all over. The idol of Lord Ganesha, which will cost nearly two lacs of rupee, is ordered to be made at Kolkata. We will offer prayers and eat laddoos and have lots of fun on that day. Please come and join us. Don’t miss the chance or you may regret. I will be eagerly waiting for you.

How’s life going on buddy? Mine is just fine. Hope you are alive and kicking. Why not consider a visit to my place? Do come soon.
You know I’ve recently made a trip to Kolkata with my family. We got off the train at Howrah station. It was such a large and congested station. We booked a taxi outside for sightseeing. Straightaway we went to the Botanical Gardens. I gathered much knowledge on different kinds of trees there. Then we moved to Victoria Memorial. It’s a wonderful white monumental building made by the Britishers. There is a museum inside. We had tonga ride outside. On the way to Birla Planetarium, we saw the Eden Gardens, where international matches are played. I was overwhelmed to see a panoramic view of Kolkata city in the show of the planetarium. Then we had some lunch and moved to our hotel room. The next day, we went to Science City. It’s so wonderful a place to enjoy and learn. For a few hours I kept on roaming around the wide campus of Science City. Then we went to Kalibari Ghat. Afterwards, we got into a metro train station and got into a train. The train was so fast that we reached Dharamtul within a few minutes. We got off and went outside on an escalator. Then we boarded a trum. Kolkata is the only city where trums are still operative. These are parts of the culture of West Bengal and are wonderfully preserved. Then we returned to our hotel room and had some lunch ordered. The cuisines are so delicious and affordable. I particularly liked ‘rasgulla’ among other sweets. I have developed a deep bond with Kolkata for the cuisines, the behaviour of people, the monuments, the Bengali culture, and the trums. What I disliked was the steep rent of hotels and discoloured buildings.

      Letter No. 2 :-

      Dear xyz,
Hey, what’s up? No phone call or letter since a couple of months. May be you are too engrossed with studies, isn’t it? I was also busy for quite some time, but I’m relieved now. You know, I am very excited to greet you here in India whenever you take the trouble to visit. Do come and meet me as soon as possible. You will surely get awestruck to see the ancient monolithic monuments and rich architecture. India was, in fact, a land of multitudes of kingdoms in the pre-colonial period. The Turkey Sultans invaded India in the 12th century and captured a part. Thereafter, many Muslim dynasties followed, such as Slave Dynasty, Khiliji Sunday, Lodi Dynasty, Mughal Dynasty etc. The Mughals ruled India for the longest duration, 600 years. They expanded their empire to a great extent, excluding parts of the deccan, maharashtra and the north east. During Aurangzeb’s reign they had the vastest empire. Some of their architectural works are the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, the Jame Masjid, Dewan-e-Khas, Dewan-e-Aam etc. Some other monuments of other dynasties are, Golkonda Fort, Qutub Minar, Vellore Fort, Hawa Mahal, Char Minar etc. Great warriors like Tipu Sultan, Shivaji, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Lachit Barphukan, Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah were born of this land. During the colonial period, revolutionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh led India towards freedom. We have a diversified culture and a plethora of languages. Yet there is unity in this diversity. Indian people are hospitable and humourous. Do visit India and have a glimpse of its rich cultural heritage.

I want to let you know that there is a newly-constructed shopping mall near our house. It’s called Vishal Megamart. Recently I went there along with some of my friends. The shopping mall is centrally air conditioned. The ground floor is for displaying women’s collection. On the 2nd floor we could see kids’ items including apparels and toys. On the third floor men’s items are displayed. There were shirts, trousers, t-shirts, jackets, pants, belts, wallets, sunglasses in this section. We could see electronic appliances, mobile phones and books on the 4th floor. On the 5th floor, grocery items and beauty products are sold. On the topmost floor, there are two restaurants and a game parlour. When you come here we will have some shopping together. Take care. Bye.

You wanted to know how to operate an ATM card. Well, it’s very easy. You just need to insert your card into a slot in the right hand side of the ATM machine and remove within 5 seconds. You will be prompted to enter your four-digit pin number and press ‘YES’ or ‘Enter’ on the screen (or on a physical key on the right hand side of the screen). Then choose ‘Cash Withdrawal’ and then ‘Savings Account’. Then the machine will ask you to enter the amount. You should press the physical keys right before the screen. That’s it. You will get the amount of money.

In reply to your last letter I would say that I recently had a spot of bother. Our house caught fire and was completely turned to ashes. All of our family members are safe and unhurt. We ringed the fire brigade but they came late. All my hopes and desires turned to ashes too. The next day I went school with borrowed clothes, shoes and backpack. I was deeply upset over the incident. It seemed I am an unwanted boy at my new school. The very next day when I reached school, I was surprised to see all sorts of things bought for me by the students and the teachers. They came near me and consoled. I made a lot of friends that day. The incident was, in fact, a blessing in disguise. With the help of local people we could reconstruct our house. Kindly visit us at our new house. Keep writing to me. Take care.

    • Dear friend,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the humility of a great visionary, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Recently the International Education Day was observed in our school on 15th October. I was greatly inspired to hear about his great personality from the speeches delivered by our teachers. He was not only a statesman but also a great visionary. Despite being a President, he chose to lead a simple life. He liked children and young people. He used to visit schools and colleges and interacted with the students. He inspired them as much he could. To quote him, “If you want to shine like a Sun, you must burn like a Sun”. Another inspiring quote from him is, ” Don’t take rest after your first success. If you fail afterwards, more tongues are waiting to say that your first success was pure luck. “. He breathed his last during a seminar conducted at Shillong. With his death we have lost a great soul. He will forever be remembered for his humility, truthfulness, inspiration, knowledge and simplicity.

I had a great day yesterday at school. Our teachers informed us that it was Cleanliness Day yesterday. They held a meeting and delivered speeches on the importance of cleanliness. They asked us to clean our shoes, nip our nails, brush our teeth, have a bath, and wash our clothes on our own everyday. They said, “Cleanliness is godliness”. I have started doing as they said. You should also keep yourself and your environment clean. Then only you can be a gentleman. Take care. Bye

You know, I visited the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata along with some of my friends recently. We were so much awestruck to see the architecture of the monument and the antiques preserved in the museum inside. Swords, attires, canons and many other sorts of antiques from the days of the kings were placed there neatly. I was overtaken with a sense of history when I saw the sword of Tipu Sultan and the antiques related to the battle of Plassey. I have heard that the Victoria Memorial was constructed to pay obeisance to the Queen Victoria of England. It is a large white domed building with an angel on top. A visit to a museum is always a rewarding experience. You must come and visit it with me. Looking forward for your reply.

I hope you are doing well. I am well by the grace of the Almighty. I hope little brother is having fun at his new school.
I have written this letter to let you know how things are going in my school. It’s an international school as you know and I have got a chance to meet students from various parts of the world. I have befriended many of them. There’s one boy from Japan named Akio Ishiguro who is my best friend. He is a really intelligent and hardworking guy and has been of great support to me in my studies. In our holidays we discuss many things including cultural traditions, literary trends and recent scientific advancements. He has asked me to visit his home in Kyoto, Japan after we complete our studies here at this school. Then there’s another guy from Mozambique. I have learnt many things on the struggles of ‘men of colour’ (it’s disrespectful to say ‘black men’) against racial discrimination. He says, things have improved now as compared to the earlier decades, more particularly after Nelson Mandela came to power in South Africa. I have learnt lots of other things from other classmates as well, and it will be difficult for me to name them all in this letter. I will introduce them when you come to visit our school. I can’t thank you enough for sending me to this wonderful school. Please take care.
